FOOD really is your best medicine

I’ve been teaching some classes about alternative health at Santa Barbara City College with my good friend and colleague, Becky Bean.

We worked together at LA Kitchens and developed their curriculum and classes. Why is food the best medicine? There are many reasons, but for example, I love using fresh herbs to make pesto. Eating this superfood is delicious, easy to digest, and it supports your immune system with many vitamins. Dr. Hazel Parcells taught me that trouble with digestion can be eased by making a blended soup with fresh vegetables. You can add chicken broth or slices of chicken for added protein.

Becky and I taught our students how to stay healthy on a college budget with vegetables and a blender. In addition, I taught a couple of classes at The Well. Then the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine rules shut everything down. Our students were stuck in their apartments, so Becky and I put a video together and sent it to them for support. While socially distanced, Becky and Paul Bean and I created this video in their back yard with an iPhone that was attached to a PCP pipe with a rubber band and then duck taped to a ladder. We just jumped in and had a lot of fun doing it. We felt we’d met a call to action to help people to stay healthy. Take a look.
